Cameroon International, Achille Emana produced a virtuoso performance last night to maintain Cruz Azul’s 100% record in the CONCACAF Champions League and eliminate Haiti’s, Valencia. The former Toulouse and Real Betis midfielder scored all 3 goals in his sides victory which is just as well as their strikers were guilty of profligacy. Mariano Pavone , Joao Rojas, Mauro Formica and Sergio Naples all spurned good opportunites and the frustration of the home fans was evident. In the end, Emana was too good for the team of semi-pros from Haiti but Cruz Azul won’t be celebrating too much as they need to correct their failings in the Apertura. The opposition was very poor but take nothing away from Achille Emana who was one of few players to make the gulf in class truly apparent. He took just 5 minutes to open the scoring when his storming run from halfway and one-two with Pavone put him through on goal resulting in a delightful clipped finish.
On the half hour mark it was 2-0 when Pavone pick-pocketed the Haitian defence and slipped in Emana. His dink over the goalkeeper was almost stopped from crossing the line but the referee correctly gave the Cameroonian his second of the night.
What followed were a series of missed chances from Cruz Azul’s misfiring frontmen. Pavone perhaps the most guilty, as he failed to score from the penalty spot just before half time. The home fans made their feelings known as they jeered their own forwards and began cheering the actions of Valencia keeper, Frandy Montrevil.
It took until the 74th minute for Emana to complete his hattrick, this time smashing in from the edge of the box after the defence had failed to clear a corner.
