With the Apertura already looking over for Chivas in September, the Copa MX represented their one route to success and that was ended last night with a 1-1 draw against a Leon reserve side in Guadalajara. In what was yet another abject performance, Coach, Juan Carlos Ortega’s job must now be under real threat. Aldo Rocha gave Leon the lead just before half time and although Rafael Marquez Lugo managed an equaliser from the penalty spot in the second half it was not enough. Out of the Copa MX and an appalling run of form in the league has seen Chivas slide into the relegation mire. For one of Mexico’s biggest side this represents a catastrophe. They will probably survive this time round but unless there is a significant improvement, Chivas could find themselves in even further danger at the end of next year’s tournament. The stand out tie from the draw is Monterrey’s clasico clash with Tigres on the 2nd of October. Elsewhere, Atlas and Pumas face each other with both sides keen to make up for their disastrous league form and from the other end of the Apertura table, Morelia will play Leon. There is also an all-second division tie as Alebrijes de Oaxaca face Merida.
