In theory, this was perhaps a good time to play America, with qualification all but guaranteed and the clasico with Chivas on Saturday one might have been forgiven for thinking Tijuana could cause problems. However, in truth the result was never really in doubt.
America were caused to make some changes to their recent starting lineup, due to national call ups and also with one eye on the Super Clasico but that did not make much difference on the pitch.
Despite a strong start from the visitors they were unable to carve out much in the way of goal opportunities and so inevitably they were punished. A short corner was defended poorly allowing Paul Aguilar the freedom to control the ball and fire it across goal. Pablo Aguilar’s out stretched boot deflected the ball past his own goalkeeper in an effort to block the effort.
It wasn’t long before the lead was doubled. Osvaldo Martinez floated an inch perfect cross into the box and found the run of Narciso Mina whose diving header left Cirilo Saucedo no chance.
