The gulf in the rivalry between Mexico and the USA has never been greater but it was due to the strength of the US that has granted the misfiring El Tri a reprieve. Last night’s dramatic final qualifier looked to heading for an early Mexican exit with El Tri trailing in Costa Rica and Panama leading USA. However, injury time goals from Graham Zusi and Aron Johannsson reversed the scoreline in Panama, meaning Mexico held onto their fourth place playoff spot and set up the tie with New Zealand.
Mexico not reaching the World Cup for the first time since 1990 was a real possibility with defeat in San Jose and despite being able to celebrate reaching the playoffs it is a real low for Mexican football. Rafa Marquez went as far to say, “I hang my head in shame and it’s embarrassing for us to qualify like that.”
Embarrassing it maybe but El Tri and Victor Manuel Vucetich must now address the glaring issues within the camp and look to the playoff with New Zealand.
Relive the drama of last night again here…..
COSTA RICA 2 – 1 MEXICO
PANAMA 2 – 3 USA
