Club America were stunned last night in the Estadio Azteca as they slumped to defeat against Costa Rican side, Alajuelense and in the process were eliminated from this year’s Champions League. Cruz Azul fared better, with a 2-1 win over Herediano meaning they top Group 3 with maximum points but America’s failure is without question the big story. SEE THE GOALS HERE….
CLUB AMERICA 0 – 1 ALUJUELENSE
A virtually full strength America side was expected to run out winners in this game in the Azteca but their failure to convert any chances was punished and they must now focus on domestic matters.
Alujuelense’s winnner came not long after the break when Honduran striker, Jerry Palacios headed in Ariel Soto’s cross.
The win meant that Alujuelense booked their place in the knockout stages.
HEREDIANO 1 – 2 CRUZ AZUL
There was no such trouble for Cruz Azul who made it 4 wins out of 4 to cruise into the next round.
Achille Emana provided the perfect start for La Maquina as he slotted home Mariano Pavone’s wonderfully weighted pass after just 6 minutes.
The home side did get back level after half time through Anllel Porras’s scrappy effort but Jesus Lara Garcia’s breakaway goal, two minutes from time handed Cruz Azul the win.
