Advantage Leon after Final First Leg with America (video)

Leon took a commanding lead against Club America after last night’s First Leg with goals from the ever-impressive, Carlos Peña and Argentine striker, Mauro Boselli completing a 2-0 scoreline.

Despite being under pressure for large parts of the match, Leon’s defence, marshalled by veteran, Rafael Marquez, held firm. Away goals do not count in the final but the result leaves Club America with an uphill battle in the Azteca.

Miguel Herrera’s side didn’t play too badly but chances were wasted, particularly by forward, Luis Gabriel Rey and some sloppy defending for Leon’s goals could cost them the title, they crave so badly.

Carlos ‘Gullit’ Peña was, once again, superb in the midfield for Leon and it comes as no surprise that he opened the scoring after just 11 minutes. A cross from the right was never properly cleared and Peña rifled a fierce low drive past the fragile looking, Moises Munoz. Peña’s stock continues to rise and now as a key part of Herrera’s El Tri side, it might not be long before he joins the ranks of Mexicans in Europe.

America battled and after the break after a spell of dominance should probably have equalised. Ruben Sambueza was a constant threat and if it hadn’t been for some last ditch defending and a bit of fortune, perhaps Las Aguilas would have been level.

However, with this pressure mounting, Leon mounted another attack and the ball eventually found its way to Mauro Boselli. It appeared as though the chance had gone with the angle closing and right back, Paul Aguilar getting back to cover. However, the in-form, Boselli managed to get his shot away and expertly found the top corner to give Leon the 2-goal cushion.

It was so nearly 3 in the dying minutes when a defensive header from Aquivaldo Mosquera ended up hitting the America crossbar but it bounced away to safety.

America’s home record is formidable but they have certainly gone off the boil since their hot early season form. If they are to turn this Final around, it will take a superb performance but all eyes will be on the Azteca on Sunday evening.
