Leon completed a good week for the Mexican sides in this year’s Copa Libertadores with a 2-1 win over Flamengo in the Nou Camp despite making a slow start in the Torneo Clausura. An early red card for Brazilian, Amarel provided Leon with the advantage but Los Esmeraldas were still made to sweat for their opening day victory. Mauro Boselli put Leon in front from the penalty spot after a fairly soft decision but Flamengo threatened from set pieces in spite of their numerical disadvantage. Physically bigger and Leon not defending well it came as little surprise when Victor Caceres headed an equaliser. After the break, Leon pushed forward and eventually earned another spot kick. This time Boselli attempted a nonchalant chip only to be left embarrassed when his effort was swatted away by Felipe. However, less than 10 minutes later Franco Arizala hooked a loose ball into the roof of the net following a Leon corner and this proved decisive in Leon claiming their first 3 points. Leon are obviously approaching this Copa Libertadores seriously but they will know that improvements are needed. As entertaining as it maybe, in Liga MX too, Leon need to find a balance between attack and defence.
