Bicampeones, León have announced that captain, Rafa Márquez has signed for Serie A side, Hellas Verona.
In a club statement, President Jesús Martínez said “Club León would like to thank Rafael Marquez for his dedication and professionalism during his time at our institution where we won two league titles, and participated in the Copa Libertadores and the CONCACAF Champions League Cup.”
Martínez added “We wish him every success in his new club in the Italian league Hellas Verona.”
The 35-year-old defender showed that he is still capable of performing at the top with his inspirational performances in Brazil and now he is set to test himself once again in Europe.
Captaining El Tri in four consecutive World Cups and claiming virtually every prize going during his time with Barcelona between 2003 and 2010, Márquez is possibly the greatest Mexican footballer of all time.
The news will come as a blow to León who despite a convincing win at the weekend have not had the best of starts to the Apertura.
