Cruz Azul’s defence of the CONCACAF Champions League was abruptly ended last night in Costa Rica as their 1-1 draw against Alajuelense was not enough to come out on top of Group 6. Armando Alonso fired the hosts in front after just two minutes and although La Maquina equalised shortly after through Gerardo Torrado they could not push on for the decisive winner. The result saw the Costa Rican side qualify for the next stage and both sets of players were involved in clashes which will no doubt lead to a number of suspensions. Punches were being thrown and some fans managed to jump barriers to enter the field in what was an unsavoury end to the match. Alajuelense can expect to be weakened for the knockout stages and Cruz Azul may well miss players in December’s World Club Championship.
