While Monterrey are all but guaranteed their place in La Liguilla already, few would have fancied Morelia to pick up all three points when the two sides met on Friday night, given that Monarcas have managed that just once all season. When Carlos Guzmán put the ball into his own net to give Los Rayados the lead that outcome looked all the more likely, but the home side showed a new resolve after the break. David Depetris equalised after a fine run from Joel Huiqui and in the 74th minute, José Ruíz volleyed Morelia in front. Depetris was shortly after sent off but La Monarquía held on for a second win of the season.
Later in Tijuana, Los Xolos saw their slim hopes of making the playoffs fade even further as they slumped to defeat against title contenders, Toluca. Isaac Brizuela’s fabulous volley as he spun in behind the defence gave Los Diablos Rojos the win and leaves them just a point behind league leaders, América.
Morelia 2 – 1 Monterrey
Tijuana 0 – 1 Toluca
