Such is the current disparity between the two great rivals, huge credit must be given to Chepo de la Torre and his Chivas side for coming to the Estadio Azteca and disrupting Club América enough to earn a hard fought goalless draw. Many had predicted that this could be a simple victory for the league leaders but instead Chivas’ packed midfield and warrior-like Carlos Salcido in defence made it a thoroughly frustrating evening for Las Águilas.
Given the lineup that de la Torre opted for, one focused on disruption and solidity rather than attack, it is little surprise that América enjoyed much of the possession and created more of the chances. However, Carlos Salcido ensured that the in-form Oribe Peralta had barely a look in and clear cut chances were kept to a minimum.
It was in fact, Chivas who perhaps felt most aggrieved when referee Roberto Garcia decided not to punish Paul Aguilar for a hand ball in the penalty area.
Of course this would have been an incredible smash and grab if Chivas had managed to pull it off but América also did not do enough to warrant the victory. For now, Las Águilas remain top but there is a little concern over the sides inability to break down sides who look to stifle them.
