Pumas left it late but on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the regular season Guillermo Vázquez’s side defeated Monterrey to get the win needed to qualify for the playoffs and in the process nudge Santos out. Dante López’s well taken goal after just five minutes put Pumas in the driving seat and when David Cabrera let fly a scorching strike five minutes later which flew into the top corner, it looked as though it was the day of the Puma. Despite Ómar Arellano’s deflected effort pulling a goal back just minutes later, Pumas maintained their control and quickly reestablished their two-goal lead when Eduardo Herrera bundled in from close range. Cándido Ramírez scored a superb solo goal to reduce the deficit on the stroke of half time but Herrera added a fourth after the break. The win means Pumas jump into the final liguilla spot and will face Club América in the Quarter Finals while Monterrey, who were already safe will play Atlas.
