Cruz Azul have endured a pretty dreadful last few months and it was minutes away from getting a whole lot worse yesterday afternoon in Rabat. The CONCACAF Champions League champions trailed to Western Sydney Wanderers on a rain soaked pitch but with a man adavantage following Matthew Spiranovic’s second yellow card, an 89th minute Gerardo Torrado penalty forced the match to extra time. Mariano Pavone gave La Máquina the lead well into extra time and Torrado made sure of the victory with his second penalty once their Australian opponents were reduced to nine men. Certainly the dreadful conditions provided something of a leveller but Cruz Azul will need to improve drastically ahead of Tuesday’s semi final against Real Madrid.
