Club América earned their twelfth league title with a 3-0 victory over Tigres in a fiery encounter in the Estadio Azteca. In front of a capacity 100,000 spectators, Michael Arroyo smashed América in front before half time, breaking the resistance of their resolute visitors, but after the restart it all went wrong for Ricardo Ferretti’s side. Pablo Aguilar headed the home side in front in the tie and within 10 minutes, Tigres found themselves down to 8 men after Hernán Burbano, Damián Álvarez and Nahuél Guzmán were all sent off. Oribe Peralta rifled in a third goal and although Luís Mendoza reduced América’s numberical advantage the match was already over as a contest. The victory gives América their twelfth Liga MX title and importantly gives them one more than rivals, Chivas so it is in somewhat bizarre circumstances that manager, Antonio Mohamed is relieved of his duties. The Argentine coach will not be short of offers after capturing his second league title in México and despite his impending departure, Turco led the celebrations. It wasn’t a classic final, it certainly wasn’t a classic liguilla but for América fans everywhere that will matter little, they are now officially the most successful Liga MX side.
