Disappointingly but rather predictably Cruz Azul were easily dispatched by European Champions, Real Madrid in Marrakech. Goals from Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema had put Carlo Ancelotti’s side firmly in control at half time and after Iker Casillas denied La Máquina their best opportunity when he saved Gerardo Torrado’s penalty, Gareth Bale and Isco wrapped up the victory.
Considering the woeful season that Cruz Azul have just endured in México, perhaps the four-goal margin is not that bad. Real Madrid are capable of scoring far more goals against far better sides and if Cruz Azul had taken their chances then the scoreline may have been closer.
One bright point is that La Máquina are one of the few teams that stopped Cristiano Ronaldo from scoring. The Ballon d’or favourite failed to find the net himself, despite laying on goals for Bale and Isco, and will no doubt be eager to score when they meet either San Lorenzo or Auckland City in the Final.
