Pumas opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Querétaro in the Estadio Olímpico Universitario but the big story of the day and perhaps the first round was Leones Negros victory over Monterrey. This in itself is not a significant event but the three points meant that Chivas slumped to the foot of the descenso to provide a stark reminder of what could befall the Guadalajara giants at the end of the Clausura.
Pumas 1 – 1 Querétaro
Pumas will be hoping to build on their early liguilla exit in the Apertura and certainly there were some promising signs in the opening weekend draw. The dangerous Ismael Sosa provided the lead after 18 minutes but an instinctive poachers goal from on-loan striker, Edgar Pacheco shortly after half time ensured a share of the points.
Leones Negros 1 – 0 Monterrey
Fidel Martínez’s second half header was the only goal of the game but Leones Negros were good value for their opening weekend victory. Most would expect the Guadalajara minnows to be the side to slide out of the top flight come the end of the Clausura but there was plenty of fight in the side on Sunday. Having played less games their average is quick to improve and so they are a dangerous rival for Chivas. Los Rojiblancos need only look at the descenso table as it is to see what is a real possibility at the end of the season.
