Liga MX has perhaps been missing a real superstar and yesterday Querétaro announced the signing of one of World football’s most famous players, Brazilian legend Ronaldinho. The 34-year-old, Ballon D’or winner signed a two-year deal with Los Gallos Blancos after leaving Atlético Miniero at the end of last season. While Gaúcho might be available to make his debut next Friday against Puebla, he will undoubtedly boost Querétaro’s championship hopes and will give Liga MX a massive boost.

Rumours that had been circulating for a few days gained momentum when Ronaldinho jetted into México to meet with officials and yesterday Querétaro owner, Olegario Vazquez confirmed the deal. He tweeted:

“I am pleased to share with you that from now on the star @10ronaldinho  is ‘gallo’. He strengthens a great team, the fan base deserve it. #YoSoyGallo”

In a further statement announced by the club they added, “We are very pleased to add to our ranks as of today, a player who has excelled in international football. A world champion in 2002, World Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005.”

“We hope the fans of our city and around the country join in this celebration of having Ronaldinho as a Gallos who will contribute his experience and expertise to further strengthen this great team.”

Despite being 34 now, Ronaldinho was central to capturing the 2013 Copa Libertadores with Miniero and Querétaro will be hoping that this experience could see them challenge for similar honours and cement México’s position as one of the strongest leagues in the Americas.

Ronaldinho will wear the number 49 and added on his official Twitter:

“Now it is official! Shirt No. 49!! My lucky number!! I hope to repeat the same good times.”

I chose Mexico because of the affection that I’ve always received here. Very motivated to represent Querétaro!”

Whether you are a supporter of Querétaro or not, it is exciting to have Ronaldinho in Liga MX and I daresay the viewing figures and demand for tickets for Los Gallos Blancos match next Friday will be significantly higher.
